Rethink VJ With Interactive Performing Arts

The work, Rethink, is inspired by personal experiences. Among the continuous conflict between a patriarchal society and my sense of self, the image and role of women are reexamined along with the social expectations carried from ancient times to the present. Throughout history, aesthetic standards have been imposed on the female body by society, leading to such practices as foot binding and corsets. In today’s society, white skin, plump bust, and curved waistline are the stereotypical standards for judging a woman’s beauty. Aside from setting standards for an ideal beauty, society also expects people to take on careers that fit their gender. By trying to fit into a mold that society has set for us, our thinking is inevitably controlled by the society we live in. Created through the lens of a woman’s body, Rethink features real time VJ performance and dance, which present a variety of images and symbols, such as body measurements and Barbara Kruger-like slogans. The work is an attempt to deconstruct patriarchy.

Through such an approach, the artist hopes to stir discussion about women’s relationship within a patriarchal society. It is an attempt to break free from limitation imposed by society on one’s body. Through the perspective of individualism, this work is a rethinking of social shaping. The interaction between symbols of a new medium and dance led to a reinterpretation of the framework which a woman is bound to. At the end, consciousness takes hold to subvert a woman’s role within society, deconstructing the impact patriarchy has on suppressed women.
